Michelle's Marathon 2024

Story

In a moment of madness, I agreed to sign up for the most iconic marathon in the UK - London in April 2024. Having applied for the ballot numerous times, I have always been relieved not to get a place. However, this year was different. This year I decided to push myself harder than I have ever done and refuse to accept a 'no' offer from the ballot. Instead, I am going to do this marathon (note I do not say run) raising funds for the Christie Hospital. The Young Oncology Unit to be more specific, in memory of Josh, my nephew. We all know what a fantastic, inspirational young man he was and although he was taken from us far too soon, he will never be forgotten. I know he would be calling me a crazy lady with this challenge, and he’d probably worry I’m just a bit too old for this but age is just a number. I I’ll carry his memory with me every step of the way. Josh, you’re making me cry writing this - thanks. As always, thanks to every one of you for all your support, be it with your words or money.

I ran the London marathon

23rd April 2024
When Josh meet me at the end of my first gruelling challenge, the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride, I didn’t realise he had set the wheels in motion to create a crazy lady who likes a challenge. I’m honoured to be able to push myself and do these challenges in Josh’s memory, raising funds for the unit that cared for him so well. He has inspired me to do these things, but all seem trivial when I remember how many challenges Josh overcame. Thank you Josh for making me a better person. I’ve raised over the £2000 target and will update the page when I know the final amount. Thank you to everyone who has supported me I think it’s because you’re supporting Josh, not reinforcing my craziness.

5 weeks to go!

16th March 2024
Thank you everyone, I am so grateful for all the support I’ve received so far. Today was a tough run at the end of a tough week, but I’m pleased with the 18 miles I did with my running buddy. I’m planning on a half marathon next week then one more long run after that before tapering for the big one, obviously I’ll still be doing 5 and 10k runs right up to the day. I can’t believe how far I’ve come over the last 10 months, but I’m very excited to do this….. she says pensively.

I'm over half way there

1st October 2023
Distance wise I've now undertaken a timed half marathon - in a somewhat slow 2hr 53 minutes. However, it was on the hottest weekend of the year. I can honestly say I could not have ran it again afterwards, so know that being able to complete a full marathon is still a long way off. As you all know, I am stubborn and will continuing to train with my running buddy Louise. Not finishing is not an option for me (I might have some teeny weeny longish walks though)

August 2023

5th August 2023
Thank you Carol and Ian for giving my fundraising a fantastic kick start and your vote of confidence in my abilities. I want most my fundraising to give something back to my wonderful supporters and will be setting up a Just Giving page at some point, with links to events and other fundraising ideas. My training is going well and I’m up to running 9 miles, so still a way to go, but ahead of schedule. Getting ready for my half marathon in September.
